A little This ‘n That about Entebbe

The Gateway to Uganda…the Pearl of Africa!

Situated on a Lake Victoria peninsula Entebbe was originally the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda before independence in 1962.

The State House is the official office and residence of the President of Uganda is also located in Entebbe.

The word Entebbe came from the Luganda language ‘e nteb’e which means ‘seat or chair’ therefore known as the seat of power in Uganda.

A few points of historical interest

  • Entebbe is known to many visitors/tourists/travelers as the home of Entebbe International Airport and was opened in 1929. This airport for those of you who don’t already know was the scene of a hostage situation and rescue operation on the 4th July 1976 – over 100 hostages being held captive by a group of Palestinian and German militia were rescued and freed by an elite unit of the Israeli army.
  • It is also from this airport that Queen Elizabeth II departed Africa to return to England in 1952 after hearing of her father’s death and her nomination to become the Queen.
  • The city of Entebbe also hosted final resolution talks to end the M23 rebellion.
  • The National Botanical Gardens were established in 1898 and also provided the setting for the first Tarzan movie made.
  • Entebbe is the home of the oldest golf course in East Africa and established in 1900.

Climate

Entebbe experiences a tropical rainforest climate as the town has no real dry season throughout the year. January is the driest month while April is the wettest although we all know how the weather patterns are changing at a rapid pace. The hottest month recorded is February with the coolest being July.
